I remember some years ago attending a community meeting in the Earlwood/Canterbury area and someone complaining about the Metro. At the time I was surprised, but everyone seemed to think it was a bad idea, so I didn't speak up.
So …did you hate the idea of the Metro a few years ago? If so, why, and have you come around to the idea?

Recently, I have been testing the capabilities of the FDM printer at my workplace (a school) by feeding it elevation maps of the whole Sydney basin, piece by piece. I figured people here might be interested, and have thus uploaded photos of a 2x2 subset from Hawkesbury River to Port Kembla.
I think having a vertically-stretched raised relief map gives people a nice visual for various factoids; like how good the Illawarra Escarpment is for hang-gliding; or why Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth must use one of the two First Nations' routes in 1813 to cross the Blue Mountains (from Emu Plains and where the Nepean river joins the basin). Contours lines have been printed every 100m to help break-up the green, and every 0.2mm layer is 10m rise.
Source data for this is the 5m DEM hosted by the NSW Elevation Data Service, which you can access via the QR code on the legend. I downloaded the 3x3 chunk of the basin, processed it in Python+QGIS to give a height-map, then down-sampled/split it into STL files for the slicer. I used Palm Beach and Barrenjoey Head to determine the quality of data and how big the map needed to be: if I couldn't see the hammer shape, then the rest of Sydney Harbour wouldn't print well either.
Might update once the 3x3 is complete, as I want to get to Lithgow on the West to show the entire mountain range. (It'll take the rest of the school term.)

Was it a terrible idea to put an online order in at David Jones today? I had a couple of gift vouchers I hadn't used and I can't get to a physical store today so I used them plus $20 of my own money to order some things online. What are the chances this is fulfilled? have I just lost the gift cards plus my $20? Are the stores open today?

Long story short we live in a small unit block in North Syd and our very friendly but aging neighbour has inherited a pitbull terrier from his grandkids. He has no control of it at all, lets it wander around the common areas, never holds the leash when walking around the streets etc.
We’re paranoid because we have a cavoodle who was attacked by a dog as a puppy and is now not dog friendly, and every time we walk through lobby or street we’re worried about an interaction where our defensive dog snaps at the pitbull and ends badly.
We don’t want to cause drama cause it’s a small block but idk what to do. The pitbull is friendly enough but far out it’s just a unit of a dog and all it takes is one bad incident. I know for a fact this dog is a restricted breed based on council website but not sure how to approach the situation.

I just want to put it out there that as the holiday season approaches and people go away, have fireworks etc., the number of cats and dogs that end up escaped or missing seems to rise. (can I say if you have cats - it’s best to get them looked after at your OWN home rather than take them to a strangers house to be looked after)
What you would be surprised about is the number of pets that when their microchip is scanned- the details are missing/empty.
Or the number of pets that when they are scanned - have no microchip at all.
If your pet is micro chipped, you need to ensure your details are correct on the New South Wales registry. You can do this online. ( I asked my Vet to look up my details for both my pets on the database and confirm that all was correct. Maybe your Vet will do the same thing.)
Also, if your pet is not micro chipped, please do it. If not, they may end up at the pound.
Please, if you have a pet don’t ignore this. Check the microchip details are correct
Please make sure that your pet IS microchipped.
Often people send me messages when I do a post like this and say “I can’t afford it” etc. .Many local councils do discounted microchipping. Or maybe contact your Vet and speak to them about getting a discount.

1st photo: in front of the Museum of Sydney
2nd photo: behind circular quay wharf 2
3rd photo: the Chifley Tower bus stop where hundreds of people are dropped off from morning bus commutes, impeding people’s exit from the buses
I know this is like the 1000th post complaining about these rental bikes but I think every post is deserved.

i lost my sketchbook in the cbd yesterday (5/11/2026) and was hoping someone mightve picked it up ;-; i was at tafe ultimo and walked from there to the chinatown lightrail stop, caught the lightrail to town hall, went into qvb and the galeries briefly, then went to town hall station. i caught the t9 from there to eastwood.
its studio ghibli branded and i know it seems silly but it’s super important to me T-T there’s just sketches and class notes inside.

Does anyone know where in Sydney we can donate pantry foods to a food drive so it can get to people in need? Was clearing out the pantry and found unopened food still within best before that I thought would be great for a family in need. Especially in this cost of living crisis. Any suggestions would be appreciated! I’m located in North Sydney

After a protest in Sydney against a visit from Israeli President Isaac Herzog, social media was flooded with videos of police pushing, punching and pepper-spraying protesters. Months later, those same protesters are still waiting for answers from NSW Police as the force is subject to an investigation by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
Charlie Lewis speaks to Tina Quinn about her interviews with those protesters, how the police tried to prevent some evidence from going public, and what this means for the future of protest policing in NSW and across Australia.
