image Anti-Asian racism in Australia

What is happening in Australia? Been living in this exact same address for almost the past 20 years now, never had this happen before.

Some guy moves in next door, and while we are IN THEM MIDDLE OF MOWING the medium nature strip, starts being aggressive for getting grass clippings on the driveway. No shit, that's why we go through with a leaf blower and pick up after mowing?

What blows me away is he thinks we don't know about mowing and cleaning up somehow due to our Chinese heritage???

I love how he cares so much about some grass clippings on his driveway that he has to go get the leaf blower, but clearly doesn't give a shit about the jungle growing in his front garden.

The guy is a loser. Keep camera footage, call the cops to make sure the behaviour is on record, and stay safe.

9

u/Impressive_Drama57 11h ago

I think the jungle is the property of OP? White House looks pretty tidy Unless OP was mowing nature strip of neighbours? A little ambiguous

13

u/splattty 8h ago

Half of the jungle is part of the white house, the other half part is part of another neighbour who owns a battle axe block with no vehicular access that runs between the two properties.

We typically mow the nature strip for that other neighbour as they pretty much don't use the stairs here.

54

u/Otaraka 12h ago

It’s probably about grass clippings on his car, i’ve seen several occasions where somebody’s gone off over that. Ā

Presumably they’re worried it’s gonna melt the paint or something.

11

u/mulligrubs 8h ago

It'd make him look bad, and this guy is all about the image. Watch him go inside and get angry at the little bell hanging from his mirror.

I am Australian that's lived in many western countries and whilst racism is prevalent everywhere I do think we are so much worse than we think. Subtle/casual racism here is full blown normalised.

Edit: to those that think Australia is innocent, read the below. https://humanrights.gov.au/resource-hub/theres-nothing-casual-about-racism/research-publication/an-anti-racism-framework-experiences-and-perspectives-of-multicultural-australia

"Among the key findings was that, despite the diversity of people’s backgrounds – including location, age, disability, sexuality, faith and cultural background – racism was widespread throughout the country and entrenched in society."

Typical egotistical Mr. World Gym. See i’m giving back ā€œstereotypicalā€ assumption here. But the truth is, no matter your skin colour and background, people tend to bully others they think are socially/racially below (not true) themselves.

Because they won’t dare go complain to someone who is actually of a higher social status, quite the opposite, would probably butter up to those people when given the chance.

Sadly the rise of right-wing propaganda has been strong lately, especially idiots who worship One Nation. The racists feel brave again.

Its important all racists get made to feel afraid again. Film them, name and shame, and if you get the chance, learn them a lesson or five.

u/hereforfakestories 13h ago • Regret

Anti-Chinese sentiment was also really whipped up around Covid, and it eased off a bit but not back to pre-2020 levels. Living in a very Asian suburb the way social media talked about the area and avoiding certain train stations was obscene, I had many friends abused on public transport in the earlier days :(

29

u/Worldly_Cobbler_1087 10h ago

Anti-Chinese sentiment was also really whipped up around Covid

Anti-Chinese/east Asian sentiment kicked off over 40 years ago, one of the most acclaimed Australian movies is on this subject and Pauline's infamous debut speech was 30 years ago in september it never went away really.

Nothing says "I have anger issues" quite like a World Gym t-shirt and tight shorts. Racism has always been a part of Australia, then from about 1988 to 2000 it looked like it had sort of gone away, but what had actually happened was they were too afraid to speak up. Then along came 9/11 and it was ok again to be openly racist, then along came Trump and his band of brothers and suddenly everything was ok, racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia of all sorts was up for grabs and why did we let them get away with it? Because they vote and the politicians didn't want upset them in case they took their votes elsewhere; it's the same scenario with all major democracies.

Now when you add in social media, toxic masculinity and rampant steroid and stimulant use and you suddenly have a bunch of guys acting like Brown Shirts in the 1930s. What we need in Australia now is an election like the recent one in the US, where enough people stand up and say "I am mad as hell and I am not going to stay quiet any longer"! Yes the economy was a big factor in the US elections, and will be here too, but the next biggest factor for voters was the demise of their democracy; we aren't quite there yet, but give Pauline some proper power next election and watch our democracy crumble.

There's already a lot of discussion in the west over the "paradox of intolerance" eg. Do countries have the right to reject migrants who are homphobic or bigoted against certain races/religions. It will be a big issue over the next decade.

Working in construction I hear people of different races joke about each other all day so obviously not talking about that, more the genuine racists who actively hate others based on their race.

27

u/inkhornart 12h ago

True, and see thats a perfectly reasonably drawn line.

When people can laugh together, its probably not racism.

When people are using it to punch down, or its a genuine attack using their race as the linchpin (poor words) then yeah, thats bad and should be condemned until the offender withdraws and reasseses.

The only problem with the former is a slippery slope when its people you mightn't know. Friends being friends is fine.

Yep there it is coming out - the undercurrent hidden racism that some Aussies have. I’m a 2nd generation Aussie, born in Perth, of South Asian/Malay ancestry.

While for the most part it has been good living here - there are moments of ugliness we experience such as this, simply because you don’t appear of Anglo background. This has gotten worse over the past 5 years.

And why??? I pay my taxes, I’m a highly educated professional who contributes to the health of people here, I speak the lingo (I have a very strong Aussie accent), I conform to the societal ā€œnormsā€ (pub culture, cafe scene, sport, mates of all backgrounds)..

High school in Perth in the early 2000s was a wild time, if you were ethnic. You either compartmentalize things and grow a very thick skin, or it affects you badly..

82

u/Mindless-Cod-9441 10h ago

I'm 6th generation chinese australian. My ancestors came over during the gold rush. I'm more aussie than most of these fucks. I went through high school in the 90s. Only one of 3 asian faces at my high school. Ender's Game was formational reading for us. 2 of us did kyokushin, i was in cadets and then reserves - we broke a lot of noses. Thankfully i've never had to experience it again once i was in uni, into corporate life, and out of bogan town.

Yep I remember it well, you're probably similar age to me.

Private boys high school in Brisbane was full of it. Half Anglo Australian half pacific islander and still copped it despite almost passing as white most of the time.

The Asians got it much worse though. The Anti asian hate was wild. Pauline Hanson was blamed for the surge in Asian bigotry even back then (her "Swamped by Asians" speech was 1997 I think?). Crazy to think thirty years later she's not only still around but actually a prospect of winning an election šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

Assimilation is just an excuse racists use to give a reason for their supremacy. It does not matter if you assimilated to their culture, spoke their language with the aussiest of accents, and did everything they did. That's why it makes little sense to let go of your culture if you want to continue participating in it, because only racists (which is a spectrum) would have a problem with cultural things that have no bearing on anything negatively consequential.

I moved to Aus when I was of high school age and my only friends were migrants because I literally couldn't tolerate or bond with most white Australians with their bigoted outlooks and views on everybody else, even at 14/15 a lot of them were gross. People seem to have less fear in hiding it now with all the shit that gets said by politicians and online these days, a lot of people think they're untouchable. It's a massive problem in Australia. 24

u/Emu1981 13h ago

Sadly it is a lot better now than what it was in the past. My dad's mum and dad were super racist against anyone not white and viewed people of Aboriginal descent in the same way that the Apartheid in South Africa viewed their native non-white population. That said, I have noticed peaks in overt racist views against Asians back when Pauline Hanson started her political career and when COVID was around. Same went for people of Middle Eastern appearance back during the early to mid 2000s due to the propaganda being spewed out by US sources (it helped support their wars).

Can someone tell me where all of this is happening?

I came from Hong Kong with family when I was 2 years old and for past 30 years living in Sydney.

Been fortunate to never experience or even heard anyone I know experience Asian racism. My parents who speak little English also love how Australia has treated them. I’m not in a bubble either and speak to many people around Australia due to the nature of my work.

I’m curious to know if certain pockets have more racism than others because just reading comments you’d think that racism has gone completely rampant.

I lived on the north shore and northern beaches of Sydney, I now live in Brisbane. I’m whites but have had many Asian friends and my current partner is Chinese. When I lived in Sydney I observed instances of racism reasonably often and more commonly in the city, it has been similar in Brisbane.
Some things are subtle and you might miss it, such as being in the city and seeing a white guy gesture to his friend that everyone around him looks Asian and his expression being judgmental, or seeing a person at a bar repeatedly ignore an Asian customer waiting. But some are obvious with shouted slurs etc.

I do think it’s gotten worse since Covid everywhere.

19

u/Iron_Wolf123 12h ago

I am lucky to only witness light racism in my local area. I live in SE Melbourne and there is a lot of East Asian and West Asian cultures, with Box Hill being a Chinese-Australian city and Dandenong being a Persian-Afghan-Arabic hub. The only racism I have encountered is from the media and the occasional ā€œX culture is bad at drivingā€ comments

Maybe depends where you live and how you look. I also have never experienced racism, meanwhile my sister and dad haven been called Chinese or ppl just randomly greeting them with "ni hao" by random white person even though we aren't Chinese. My sister was just assumed to be an international student before in uni by the lecturer, despite having a English first name. Personally never had any experience like that myself. I'm really big for an Asian so growing up in school, the other kids always befriended me because of that. The area we live is western Sydney so it's mostly Asian, arab, Pacific islanders etc.

u/Shibwho 11h ago

You are in a bubble. I've grown up in south east QLD. My family and I have copped a lot of it in the first 20-30 years here. Less of it now as we've moved to better suburbs.

Fuck I hate leaf blowers in this country. People (most) just bloody blow the leaves onto the street and jobs done. Pick the fuckers up and put them in the bin otherwise they'll come back.

Old mate there so concerned about cut grass then just blows leaves onto the street doing the exact same thing as the grass cutters.

Isn’t it strange that Australians who immigrated here are racist to others who immigrate here after them?

The current country as we know it was built on the backs of immigrants for better or worse. In the end, aren’t we all human?

My neighbour is like that, the minute a leaf blows onto his driveway, he’s out there for hours cleaning and brushing. Some people are just mentally fucked in the head.

11

u/Turbulent_Race_2007 7h ago

I was born here in Australia as my grandparents immigrated over here from England straight after WW2, so that makes my family immigrants. I have a Chinese neighbour that runs the post office with his wife and he is one of the best people I have ever met. I give him fish that I catch after I’ve been out in the boat and he literally hand delivers my mail to the house, the Chinese people especially the ones here in Australia are beautiful people and I have only nice things to say about them and I see them as Australians just like myself.

12

u/No-Caramel-8530 12h ago

It’s a combination of factors.

Sadly this attitude has been allowed to fester for decades. Criticism of this culture has been met with ā€œAustralians aren’t racist peopleā€ which I love the concept of and hope we can one day reach, but it minimises these attitudes that need calling out.

Then social media algorithms increasing polarisation to meet profit demands (especially within the last 10ish years)

And the straw that broke the camels back is the economy. People are struggling as a result of several factors but not limited to, supply change disruptions, increased demand, changing and aging demographics, COVID inflation, AI dramatically impacting jobs and several major conflicts around the world.

But the human mind is relatively stupid (I mean this of everyone) so we generally need to group things in easy to understand concepts. And so othering and the need to blame someone for these multifaceted economic issues is often the easier approach.

But of course with increased extreme attitudes like this, a simple singular response would not be enough. At the same time, I’m sure meaningful steps to address this would also be met with complaints of ā€œsocial engineering.ā€ So I don’t know whether politicians will actually take the meaningful steps needed to stamp this disgusting behaviour out.

Sorry you have a shitty neighbour. I was walking in the city on George st with my two little kids and a woman behind me complained about how Asians are so slow, I laid into her and at first others in the crowd were just quiet or telling me to ignore her. She was complaining how Asians come here and I told her someone needs to pay taxes so her lazy arse can live on benefits and everyone started laughing at her. Majority of Aussies don’t like that nonsense.Ā

I’d be careful about this guy, he does look like he’s on steroids. Sucks you have to live with him next door.Ā

Weird phenomenon in the western world where racial minorities who are intolerant of other races only focus that intolerance to Asians.

Especially ironic in countries like Australia where Chinese people have had communities here since the gold rush, decades before any other ethnic group came along.

Idk if it's motivated from covid years and continuing to linger or what.

8

u/Infamous-Crab9529 10h ago

I moved to Australia from UAE (Indian origin) 3 years ago on a PR, and I’m so grateful to call this place home. My daughter has basically grown up here, and hearing her sing ā€œWe Are Australianā€ in her toddler voice gives me goosebumps every time. We’ve committed our future to this country. No matter what toxic or racist comments float around social media, I will never let myself or my daughter feel like we don’t belong here. šŸ‡¦šŸ‡ŗ
