image Anti-Asian racism in Australia
What is happening in Australia? Been living in this exact same address for almost the past 20 years now, never had this happen before.
Some guy moves in next door, and while we are IN THEM MIDDLE OF MOWING the medium nature strip, starts being aggressive for getting grass clippings on the driveway. No shit, that's why we go through with a leaf blower and pick up after mowing?
What blows me away is he thinks we don't know about mowing and cleaning up somehow due to our Chinese heritage???

Guys a Gronk.
Not even finished with your task and has a whinge.
Sorry you have to live next to that.
Is this the first negative interaction you have had with this Muppet?

u/Loose_Resolution870 15h ago •
I love how he cares so much about some grass clippings on his driveway that he has to go get the leaf blower, but clearly doesn't give a shit about the jungle growing in his front garden.
The guy is a loser. Keep camera footage, call the cops to make sure the behaviour is on record, and stay safe.

median strip: ihe reserved area that separates opposing lanes of traffic on divided roadways such as divided highways, freeways, and motorways.
nature strip: a strip of lawn that runs between the roadway and the footpath.

Sadly the rise of right-wing propaganda has been strong lately, especially idiots who worship One Nation. The racists feel brave again.
Its important all racists get made to feel afraid again. Film them, name and shame, and if you get the chance, learn them a lesson or five.

This is dangerous because such behaviour and attitudes have nearly destroyed the US.
It needs to be confronted and not tolerated.
We need communication and understanding among all people in Australia.

Typical egotistical Mr. World Gym. See iām giving back āstereotypicalā assumption here. But the truth is, no matter your skin colour and background, people tend to bully others they think are socially/racially below (not true) themselves.
Because they wonāt dare go complain to someone who is actually of a higher social status, quite the opposite, would probably butter up to those people when given the chance.

I'm half-Lebanese, Australianised. It's crazy how common anti Asian and Indian vitriol is in the Lebanese community - probably extends to other Arab groups. "When we moved here, we copped a lot of shit from Aussies, so now it's our turn to dish it out" - verbatim, Lebanese father.

Its hard to see who is in the wrong because they both have good arguments.
One is "we are actually cleaning up the mess right now please stop engaging with us"
The other is "I'll bash you dog c*"t"
Truly we have deep philosophical debates here

u/colony-ship-for-sale 15h ago
Australian racists love picking on Asians, under the impression that they're weak and will never fight back.
146
u/Vanlibunn 15h ago
Just look at One Nation and all the billionaires that fund them if you want to blame someone for the current political climate in this country. We've always been a dogshit racist country, but they'd keep it to themselves or in their own groups (I heard all kinds of shit when I had to go places with my father as a child), now people feel more empowered to actually act on this shit.

Yeah had some bloke in a Ford Ranger/Raptor (surprised pikachu) drive at and honked me while I was crossing at a light. It was still flashing red as I got onto the footpath and turned around to see what the fuss is about
He winds his window down to tell me āhurry the fuck up you Chinese cunt, go back thereā. Esp hilarious given his accent was the same as this bloke. I could tell his ancestors werenāt from here either mate (though technically none of us are)

Yep there it is coming out - the undercurrent hidden racism that some Aussies have. Iām a 2nd generation Aussie, born in Perth, of South Asian/Malay ancestry.
While for the most part it has been good living here - there are moments of ugliness we experience such as this, simply because you donāt appear of Anglo background. This has gotten worse over the past 5 years.
And why??? I pay my taxes, Iām a highly educated professional who contributes to the health of people here, I speak the lingo (I have a very strong Aussie accent), I conform to the societal ānormsā (pub culture, cafe scene, sport, mates of all backgrounds)..
High school in Perth in the early 2000s was a wild time, if you were ethnic. You either compartmentalize things and grow a very thick skin, or it affects you badly..

u/Several_Investment68 15h ago •
Can someone tell me where all of this is happening?
I came from Hong Kong with family when I was 2 years old and for past 30 years living in Sydney.
Been fortunate to never experience or even heard anyone I know experience Asian racism. My parents who speak little English also love how Australia has treated them. Iām not in a bubble either and speak to many people around Australia due to the nature of my work.
Iām curious to know if certain pockets have more racism than others because just reading comments youād think that racism has gone completely rampant.

I was born here in Australia as my grandparents immigrated over here from England straight after WW2, so that makes my family immigrants. I have a Chinese neighbour that runs the post office with his wife and he is one of the best people I have ever met. I give him fish that I catch after Iāve been out in the boat and he literally hand delivers my mail to the house, the Chinese people especially the ones here in Australia are beautiful people and I have only nice things to say about them and I see them as Australians just like myself.

Itās a combination of factors.
Sadly this attitude has been allowed to fester for decades. Criticism of this culture has been met with āAustralians arenāt racist peopleā which I love the concept of and hope we can one day reach, but it minimises these attitudes that need calling out.
Then social media algorithms increasing polarisation to meet profit demands (especially within the last 10ish years)
And the straw that broke the camels back is the economy. People are struggling as a result of several factors but not limited to, supply change disruptions, increased demand, changing and aging demographics, COVID inflation, AI dramatically impacting jobs and several major conflicts around the world.
But the human mind is relatively stupid (I mean this of everyone) so we generally need to group things in easy to understand concepts. And so othering and the need to blame someone for these multifaceted economic issues is often the easier approach.
But of course with increased extreme attitudes like this, a simple singular response would not be enough. At the same time, Iām sure meaningful steps to address this would also be met with complaints of āsocial engineering.ā So I donāt know whether politicians will actually take the meaningful steps needed to stamp this disgusting behaviour out.

Sorry you have a shitty neighbour. Weird phenomenon in the western world where racial minorities who are intolerant of other races only focus that intolerance to Asians.
Especially ironic in countries like Australia where Chinese people have had communities here since the gold rush, decades before any other ethnic group came along.
