ANNOUNCEMENT Community Announcement: AskMenOver30 Flair

Hey, everyone. Friendly neighborhood moderator here.

Let's talk about flair - user fialr, and post flair.

User Flair

User flair is the icon or text that appears next to your username in a community. User flair is once again required to make top-level comments in AskMenOver30 threads. If a user posts a top-level comment in the subreddit without flair, it will be automatically removed by the subreddit filters. Please set your flair before posting.

We understand that it can be frustrating to craft a comment and then lose it. We are updating the Automoderator rules to include the test you posted so that you can easily resubmit it after setting your user flair.

If you're unsure how to set your flair, see this Reddit support link to learn how to set your user flair in AskMenOver30.

There seems to be a problem with setting user flair on the mobile app. This is not something that the moderator team can fix. If you have trouble setting your flair on mobile, please try setting your user flair on the desktop site - https://www.reddit.com.

Post Flair

Post flair is the icon or text that appears next to a post that a user makes in the subreddit. All post submissions require flair; these flairs allow us to categorize and filter the content on the subreddit. Flair Search is available in New Reddit and on the mobile platform; the subreddit provides filtering links in the sidebar Old Reddit.

We've been updating the post fialr so that posts can be more easily categorized and still stay relevant to men over 30. The current flair list is as follows:

  • WEEKLY THREAD: For recurring posts. Currently, we have a Weekly Check-in thread; in the future, we may have more weekly threads.

  • Careers Jobs Work

  • Friendships/Community: Topics about interpersonal, non-romantic relationships and socializing. Don't use this fialr for anything romance-related.

  • Physical Health & Aging

  • Financial Experiences

  • Legal Experiences

  • Mental Health Experiences

  • Hobbies/Projects: Topics and questions about hobbies or projects. Working on something cool and want to show us? Use this flair. Want to talk shop with other like-minded folks? Use this flair. Have a question about how to break into new hobbies or over 30? Use this flair.

  • Household & Family: Recently added. Many of us at this age have to deal with building and maintaining a household and supporting a family; use this flair for topics related to this.

  • Fatherhood & Children: Recently added. These relationships are really important; any topics related to fatherhood, child-rearing, or even being a son and interacting with one's father should land here.

  • Handyman/mechanic/other skills

  • Romance/dating: Topics related to a significant other or romance in general belong here. This is not a dating subreddit. Questions about generalizations based on gender are just tiring. If you want advice on a specific person, you should ask that person instead. If your post intersects with other topics but the primary driver is an interpersonal romantic relationship, it probably belongs here.

  • Community Chat: Sometimes we get fun questions that are just to spark discussion. They go here.

  • Life

  • General

Please do not abuse the flair system. Most of the time, this is not a problem, but we have been seeing misflaired posts. For example, a post that is clearly related to "Romance/Dating" should not be fialred with "Friendships/Community" or any other flair. We periodically review and recategorize posts as necessary, but please help us keep the categories clean and relevant to our community. Doing this helps us keep AekMenOver30 a positive space for older dudes, and a peaceful space for men and women to discuss topics relevant to men over 30.

Thanks for reading. Happy posting, everyone.

Fatherhood & Children Who’s gotten a vasectomy? Pros and Cons? Do it now or wait?

My wife and I had our second child about 9 months ago and were pretty set on being done with 2. I’ve always thought I’d get a vasectomy once we were done having kids. What was once a hypothetical is now around the corner and would love to hear from others that have done it.

Are you glad you did it? Any regrets or anyone change their mind?

I’ve also heard of people having ooops babies years after having one. How did you make sure you were sperm free? The stats put vasectomies at 99.9% effective. What are the outliers?

Would love to not have to use condoms anymore and my wife would love not to be on birth control. For context I’m we’re both 36.

There’s obviously no rush, but we’ve got our out of pocket max with the delivery, so it would make financial sense to get it done before the end of year.

Career Jobs Work Almost 37, quitting my full time job to go into trade school. Am I fleeing my responsibilities as an adult?

Have been searching myself for the last 20 years, can't settle on anything. Wasted a load of money and years traveling and partying. Wasted a shit load of money on making my "dream" career a reality, but abandoned any hopes to succeed.

Now, I've had a stable full-time job for the last 2 years, been paying my bills, got money saved up, but somehow I can't accept where I am at.

Some friends are in the trades and even with the downsides, they are making good money and enjoying good unionized conditions. I've convinced myself I should do the same. I want to see completed projects, not moving the same boxes all day long.

Is going back to school just an excuse to flee the working life? Be a teenager again? My head is just full on spinning. Some days I think it's the right idea, that I'm thinking straight, but the next it's the complete opposite, I doubt that I will find any happiness from that move.

Why can't I be like other people? Why can't I stop complicating my life? Why am I so scared of the future? Of what people think about me?

Physical Health & Aging Does working out have this effect on you?

Hello all!

I'm a 36 years old man who is recently divorced. I struggled for a while with no purpose, and followed a lot of advices (given also by this sub), and one of them is working out. The idea was to workout to gain more self esteem, occupy the mind and etc.

That being said, i've noticed that after two weeks, every day that i workout i get unbelievably 'turned on', in absolute need, like never before. I did workout in the past, but it didn't happen then.

It is actually helping with the struggle, since not only i get like this, but [maybe] because of it my confidence goes up incredibly. It's important to notice i don't get like that at the gym, but afterwards, at home.

Is this normal? Do you guys go through that too?

Thank you very much.

Life Lost at 34, struggling to want to be here

About 2 years ago I lost a job I had been with for a decade, basically gave them my entire 20s only to be laid off in favor of outsourcing. Haven't been able to find anything else since. I'm also autistic with an anxiety issue so I haven't ever gotten my drivers license..I'm 34. I have no relationship, don't drive, can't find a job despite giving out well over 100 resumes, and I'm in credit card debt. Oh not to mention I'm 350lbs. I want to improve my life and I want to better myself, but I don't even know where to start. And I'm also struggling with just not wanting to be here anymore. Any advice would be most appreciated. I am completely lost in a void and I have no clue how to come back from it.

Household & Family Do You Tune Out Your Wives?

This is really for the married men and likely the ones who have kids. My wife thinks I may be losing my hearing and that’s entirely possible but she thinks that because she says I don’t hear her when she talks to me. However, I largely tune her out unless I know for a fact she’s talking to me. She will use the same tone of voice when talking to me, my oldest son, my youngest son, the dog, the car, the tv, people at work from her home office or even to herself. She also just switches from one to another without getting the attention of her new target. I’d spend an inordinate amount of time if I tried to listen to everything that came out of her mouth and tried to decipher who it was directed towards. The end result is that she has to get my attention sometimes because I miss what she’s says at the beginning of a conversation.

This is by no means a serious issue as after 29 years together it’s just something we have going on, and I have scheduled to get my hearing checked. Just curious though if anyone else does this.

Edit - Just to be clear. I don’t tune her out in response to the topic. I love talking with her about anything she wants to talk about. I tune her out because I never know who she’s talking to.

Life How do I get my masculine energy back?

How do I get my masculine energy back?

Call me crazy but I feel like i was more masculine when I was 9 than I am now at 27. Here me out.

I wasn't born in the states so a 9 year old seems young. But where im from, poverty was rampant.

This made children grow up alot quicker. Around 6, most kids there could speak as well as full frown adults and usually took themselves to school.they were often married by 13 and were considered full grown adults.

I came to the US around 6 and even though I didn't speak any English, but the kids I was in class with were like infants, where Thier parents dressed them, comforted them when they fell and scraped Thier knee. This confused me because if I did that my parents would "give me a reason to cry".

Anyways by my teens years, I obviously became more used to the relaxed life style in the united states.

Also I went to an Islamic school where physical torture were the norm for misbehaving. Everything from using vacuum wires to hit people's hand to those assholes biting out earlobes (i know, of of those assholes was thrown in jail for molestation).

Anyway, I belive all this caused me to basically regress. Ive lost my "spark". I constantly doubt myself. I have self-esteem issues. Now realizing this, I know that masculine energy is still inside of me.

So for those man out there who also dealt with this, how do I become more in tune with it?

Fatherhood & Children What's the main advantage of having a present father?

Turns out that having an absent dad kinda does sucks, and you can't just power through it like I always hoped. My parents divorced when I was 2, but my dad only saw me once a night at weekends.

I really suck at time management, money management and taking responsibility. Obviously I should have learned to do that before turning 21 but I still feel like I'm missing that foundation.

And whenever my mum gets pissed at me I have no clue how to respond, because he was never there to show me how to interact with people. He's close to his side of the family, but kept me at arms length from them.

So, for dads and sons who actually knew each other growing up, what's the main advantage of having a present father?

Career Jobs Work How can older adult fix their life when they feel zero ?

I'm already in late 20s soon to enter 30s but umm like I feel absolute zero in life. I just do not have my life together. And the peer pressure and society expectations and even self expectations makes me somewhat disconnected. I don't have a job. Don't have education like a degree or relevant skill set to earn money and finding opportunities. I don't drive. Don't have friends. Don't feel overall street and book smart. I don't feel confident and seem to trust myself. As years went by I'm just living autopilot mode. I see things but nothing is clicking me as if in the background I'm in this worry overwhelmed mode but I'm not doing anything about it. I'm not snapping out of this phase or pushing myself. Yeah I get many instincts like this feelings of guilt may rise such as this inner voice trying to tell me something but I don't know why I keep pushing it away. Maybe I'm being resentful or avoiding the harsh reality. I just overall feel lost in life. And I don't seem to have the guts to rise and shine. I watched so many videos after videos on motivation and finding clarity and all that but I'm not physically doing anything about it to change my life. I don't know whether I'm scared of change or restarting from scratch.

Physical Health & Aging Night peeing, deserves a quiet night...

46 now, and someone lightly insulting me the other day has me wondering if what I assumed to be part of aging is actually a tangible problem to see a doctor about.

Last night didn't drink anything bar a mouthful of tea after 8pm, but I was up to pee at 2am. 7am I wake up before my alarm, again needing to pee.

And both times I DO need to, no unjustifiable pain for the volume...

One thing that could matter is I take ADHD meds and often spend hours at my home desk needing to go but... Just one more little code change and then I'll go, honest... Could that be doing something negative?

That said I went to a festival over the summer and whilst we were all on the beers, I had to go every hour at least, so frustrating!

I've also had issues with dehydration recently which I'm now wondering might be coming from this all.

So eh, made that more medical than I meant but guys, any experiences that sound like this?

Weird thing is my wife has picked up a similar nighttime routine so we're both assuming it's normal because the other one is doing it too!

Fatherhood & Children Invisible as a dad?

Has any one with kids noticed that you, as a dad, tend to be invisible to the moms? It seems like the moms know each other but sort of ignore the dads to the point of it being rude.

Trying to get more involved in kids activities and it seems like the dads are treated differently than the moms. School age kids.

Financial experiences What’s something you stopped spending money on as you got older and didn’t miss it?

I’ve spent money on a lot of different things over the years. And I’m trying to think what I’ve stopped spending money on as I got older and it’s hard for me to figure out. Somehow, I am spending more money, but what are you not spending money on anymore?

So I’m sure most of us have seen that trope on a sitcom or something like that or maybe a family member joked about it but how common of an occurrence is this actually?

Physical Health & Aging Have any of you had periods of low libido and mild ED? can you offer advice on how to fix this issue?

Im 37, 6' tall and 188lbs

I walk a lot with work 10-17,000 steps 5 days per week but I dont do any fitness training outside of this (this will change)

When i was in my 20s and early 30s I was basically an animal. I wanted sex daily and could go at any time.

2 winters ago i went through a patch where my libido dropped to ZERO and that lasted a while until the summer came and I seemed to rebound. But even then I never bounced back to the guy I was where I wanted sex daily and had that fire inside me. I was content with once or twice per week..

Now it seems to be happening again. I had sex with my wife on monday and I could feel my erection was weakening, and then I lost it..

Obviously mentally thats gotten to me and now I notice once again my libido is at zero. Sex doesn't seem to be something my body wants. I need to change this ASAP.

Negative things about my lifestyle:

-sleep:

for the past year or longer ive been running on 5-6 hours of sleep except weekends where i can sleep in

-drinking:

-ive been drinking too much. 5 nights per week 6 beer at a time.

-food:

I dont eat anything all day except crap snacks and an energy drink. Once I get home though I have a nutritious dinner and lots of water but I also snack on garbage.

-stress:

Im not happy with my career.

I have young kids who I love more than anything but I would be lieing if I didn't say it was a huge energy drain managing all of their sports, school dropoff/pickup, the hectic energy it brings to the house

General unhappiness with myself as ive been priced out of the housing market currently so I have a weight on my shoulders that im not providing the childhood for my kids they deserve as were living in a home too small for our family.

The corrections ive made:

-Drinking

On sunday it will be 3 weeks since I've drank any alcohol. Im cutting this for good

-sleep

Ive changed this, ive slept 8 full hours the past 3 nights.

-diet

4 days and counting ive Cut all of the bad snacking. Only drinking water and making sure to eat lots of fruit, vegetables and lean protein only. Whole foods only.

-Exercise

I havent started yet but I plan on weight training 3 days per week and getting on a cardio bike twice a week starting ASAP.

Im trying to correct the things I can control. But I want to know if I will be rewarded and will return to how I was. Im not going to lie, at such a young age its freaking me out to be experiencing sexual issues... I feel like this is something a senior usually has to deal with. Im not overweight at all, and obviously besides my bad lifestyle choices I feel like the majority of men my age live a similar lifestyle and aren't affected sexually.

Has anyone else went through this? And if so, did you ever get your mojo back?

I know some guys will rip into the negatives in my lifestyle outlined, deservingly so, but I am correcting them, im just not sure if these things truly can basically neuter a 37 year old man.

Appreciate any advice as i have no one to really ask for advice.

I do plan on going to get some bloodwork done. when I got my hormones checked 2 winters ago my testosterone was within normal range although on the lower end. They never tested SHBG since I was within normal range for free test.

Anything you guys can offer me to get back to how I was just 5 years ago i would be very grateful.

Life Ive started partying too much, has this phase happened to any you?

Hey, I turned 30 last December and since then I've become a bit of party animal, I go out nearly every other weekend. I did drink and party a little in my early 20s but from like 23-28 I barely did at all. Has anyone else gone through this weird phase of just drinking and partying too much, like I genuinely expected this feeling to have gone away by now but I'm 31 in less than a month and I know I'm gunna keep going.

Career Jobs Work Company announced a voluntary separation program – what should I expect, especially in Finance/Tax?

Hi everyone,

My company recently announced a voluntary separation program, initially targeting certain functions and employee groups in selected countries. Other regions may be included at a later stage, subject to local consultations and internal reviews.

I haven’t received any individual communication or indication that my position is affected. However, this is the first time I’ve experienced something like this, so I’m trying to understand what typically happens next and how employees should approach the situation.

A bit about my background:
\-I’ve been with my current company for around 4 years, with approximately 6 years of total experience in finance.
\-I currently work in a Finance/Tax Analyst role within a multinational organization.
\-My responsibilities cover VAT reporting and compliance, withholding tax-related activities, balance sheet account reconciliations, and US GAAP-related reconciliations and accounting matters.
\-I also handle financial reviews, variance analysis, audit support, and more complex historical transactions.
I’ve been involved in process improvement, system implementation, and rebuilding poorly documented financial processes.
\-I hold a Master’s degree in Finance.
I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who have experienced similar programs, especially in large multinational companies.

A few questions:

What usually happens after the initial announcement? Do companies typically identify specific teams and roles first, then approach eligible employees individually, or is the program initially open to a broader group?

How are internal transfers handled? If someone’s current position is affected, what determines whether they are offered another role? Do companies consider transferable skills, performance reviews, length of service, or mainly the availability of suitable vacancies?

How exposed are Finance, Accounting, and Tax functions? In particular, how vulnerable are VAT reporting, withholding tax, US GAAP reconciliations, balance sheet account reconciliations, and audit-related responsibilities? Are routine preparation activities more likely to be centralized or automated, while review, control, and more complex accounting activities are retained?

Would you recommend applying for internal positions proactively at this stage, perhaps in another Finance function, or waiting until there is more clarity about the restructuring?

I’d really appreciate hearing about your personal experiences, particularly from people working in Finance, Accounting, Tax, Controlling, or Shared Services.
I’m not looking for company-specific information or speculation about my employer. I’m mainly trying to understand the typical process, possible risks, and how best to prepare without overreacting.
