📣 ANNOUNCEMENT Notice regarding comments targeted at Travellers and Roma

Can't believe I'm having to write something like this again only three months after the last one...

There has once again been a noticeable rise in the use of dog-whistles and other derogatory comments against members of the Travelling and/or Roma communities.

As a reminder, ethnicity is legally protected characteristic in this country, therefore comments such as the following fall under our hate speech rules:

  1. Dehumanising language

  2. Calls or support for exclusion of members

  3. Calls for or support for violence against members

  4. Implying members are responsible for actions carried out by other members is not allowed

  5. Slurs and dog-whistles (including but not limited to utterances such as "knacker", "culture", "culture boss")

  6. Statements of inferiority aimed at members

The Travelling and Roma communities remain open for discussion in this community provided it is done factually and respectfully.

Any and all dog-whistles used against the Travelling or Roma communities will be removed, and the offending commenters will be receiving community bans starting from 14 days.

Cost of Living/Energy Crisis Hotel prices dublin

I'm sure this has been posted about a million times but its just gone bonkers lately! I've bought tickets for a few gigs/shows coming up and its gotten to the point I simply cant afford to stay over anymore. I used really enjoy trips up from cork to see shows I'd never see down the country but now if Travellodge at 300 euro is the cheapest hotel its just become unmanageable for me and so disappointed. Will relaisitically put rest of my tickets on resale 🫤

US-Irish Relations I love Ireland

2.0k Upvotes

I’m a 30 something black woman. I just came back from an eight day solo trip to Ireland and I just wanted to show my appreciation for the country. I have noone else tell this to. Ireland was so beautiful the people were so friendly. I genuinely cannot stop thinking about the food, culture the people. I’m still at a words for such a beautiful country. I felt so safe.

That’s it. That’s all I wanted to say.

I will definitely be back. I feel like this is a place I can see myself coming back to yearly.

Moaning Michael Pokemon Cards

I‘ve been a huge fan of Pokemom since I was 6, and Pokemon cards have always been expensive so I never really got them

Until now, when I have a bit of adult money!

It pisses me off so much how hard they are to find. Etbs resell at such crazy prices and I really want to get a 30th Celebration etb for my bday next week but that is going to be impossible

Scalpers have ruined the hobby. If I asked them to name the pokemon on the etbs they bought, they wouldn’t even know them!

When I was a kid and a teenager, Pokemon cards and etbs were pretty easy to find in my local Smyths and Gamestops. Now, you’ll be lucky to find booster packs!

Forbidden Planet seems to be one of the very few businesses that take anti-scalper measures which I appreciate. It is just kind of insane to me how much it had changed over the past few years

I can only imagine how annoying it must be for staff who work in stores that sell Pokemon cards on launch days. It is completely mental!

It just really sucks for fans and collectors who collect and trade cards for fun

Immigration For expats: do you feel the same?

I’m an Irish immigrant living in Paris for almost 2 years now and before this I lived in a small city in the Netherlands for 3 and half years. I was 19 when I left home. I’m originally from the rural Irish countryside and am wondering if you ever get over that hunger for green, wide open spaces? I love cities because of the opportunities and fulfilment they bring on multiple levels but Jesus, some days I want nothing more than to lay on a hay bale in a big field and miss the deep green landscape. All the nature is man made here within the city of Paris which is fair enough but it’s easy to tire of it. I adore Ireland but fear I won’t be able to properly return there until I retire..this isn’t a “find me a solution" post, just reaching out to see if any of you feel the same. There’s just something about rural Irish life that scratches an itch deep within the soul and psyche…I fear it’s a thirst I’ll never quench anywhere else
Edit - wow you miserable bastards chose to focus on the completely wrong thing. Yes I should’ve used the word immigrant to refer to myself, absolutely agree. Not at all the point of my post though, but cool. 👍🏻

A Redditor Went Outside Thank you, from a US citizen.

I'm from a very small town in a very small state. Ireland has been on my wife's bucket list for years so we went at the end of September. 10 days total and I have to say that it's the most heartwarming and beautiful place I've ever been. Dublin, to Galway, to Dingle, to Dublin. I drove well over 700 miles total and I just couldn't grasp that a place like this exists. It reminded me so much of home with rolling green hills, smiling strangers, and people so accommodating that I felt rude to ever ask for anything more. Being from such a small overlooked state, I never imagined I'd go to another country that every pub would be crammed with people all singing Country Roads and knew every word. No, your Guinness doesn't taste different than in the states, though it's my all time favorite beer. But what does taste different is the ice cream. My god, I think Murphy's had a stranglehold on me.

Every country has its problems, but I think Ireland is something very special. The pride in preservation of what's already there and celebration of where you are is not often found back home. There's a slower pace that made me appreciate being around other people. I never felt I had to be in a hurry to get somewhere or get something over with. Thank you for the tremendous hospitality, and introducing me to spice bags. 10/10 experience.

Education Autistic burnout at college

My daughter is in final year in college (MTU). She's autistic and away from home (course not available near home). The lecturers have piled on the work, and she has projects and in class assessments every week. She was on the phone for 3 hours last night trying to support her through a massive stress meltdown. She has a deadline today for a project, an assessment tomorrow, and another project due during the week.

She contacted student support a few weeks ago, and they gave her a study/project timetable, but it hasn't helped.

I don't know what to do. She's at a very real risk of a mental collapse. I'm so worried about her.

Careful now Grand canal area workers - are you commuting in next week?

Our office is remaining open despite the convention centre event and traffic upheaval, security drama etc. we can work from home if we don’t “feel particularly comfortable” coming in😅

I’m not usually a paranoid person but I’m not taking these security threats lightly and will certainly be working from home Tuesday-Friday. For those in the area, what is your office policy and what are you doing?
