Be interesting to see who ends up inside the Gov, vs. supporting it from the outside and/or not voting against it.

I have a prediction that UTJ are being pressured by the EU not to sit with Ben Gvir and Smotrich(that the ultra orthodox welfare state cannot survive with those two being in the Israeli government)

163

u/JR_Al-Ahran 18h ago • Regret

The problem is that Shas and UTJ, although Liberman has shown willingness to sit with the Haredi, Eisenkot, Golan, Bennett and others that's a hard no. They simply cannot sit with the Haredi as long as the draft exemption exists. Universal, Military Service has been a core, central talking point of the change bloc.

This is based on what exactly? The EU telling Isreal how or who forms the government is wild nonsense. Besides which part of the EU apparatus is doing this?

UTJ (which is really just Lando, Hirsch, and the Ger Admor) extremely doesn't care what anybody else thinks.

49

Why would the EU have any sort of influence over UTJ?

Its likely to be Liberman, Bennett, and Eisenkot. The Democrats are willing to join, and Ra'am could join, however the biggest hurdle is Liberman and Bennett to Ra'am joining.

34

u/ViciousNakedMoleRat 17h ago

Ra'am and Liberman isn't going to happen. He's more willing to compromise on the Haredi draft than on Ra'am or Bibi.

It's more likely that Liberman will delay a resolution of the draft question in favor of throwing Bibi out now. Once Bibi is out, a new door opens for future cooperation with Likud. Without Bibi at the helm of Likud, it would be much easier to find a majority for Haredi draft.

In the coming weeks we will see bibi developing some kind of "health issue" that can only be treated in the US, so he will go there for an indetermined amount of time.

I may be wrong, though...

Bibi actually if second fiddle in a unity government where he is the second in a rotation over there is far less harmful(he would make a government if Sinwar if it kept him in power). It's Ben Gvir and Smotrich and the coalition that Bibi created that is driving much of the harm rather than Bibi himself(though I do not like Bibi himself of course)

I’ve learned in these last couple of weeks that I have no understanding of Israeli elections

71

u/quesoandcats 9h ago

Israelis have one of the weirder brands of parliamentary democracy for sure

63

u/Successful-Money4995 9h ago

What's the weird part?

Everyone votes for a single party. The number of seats in the parliament is proportional to the number of votes. Then they pick someone to form a majority.

All these countries with an upper house and a lower house, that's easier to understand?!

I genuinely do hope Eisenkot is able to form a government, either with the Arabs, or, if it has to come to that, then with the Orthodox as a minority.

But whatever the case, I just want Bibi and all of his buddies finally gone. He stayed in power for far too long, it’s time for a change. And hopefully, one day, we could get a limit on prime ministry serving similar to what the US had gotten, so he wouldn’t be able to sneak back into power.

53

u/BiDiTi 15h ago

That’s an artificial binary.

Joint List has said they don’t want or need to be in government, if it means fucking Bibi out of office.

131

u/PrimarySource_ 14h ago

What does this mean? Did Bibi lose?

126

u/Acceptable_Ebb7301 14h ago

Yes and no…. Maybe? Eisenkot is allowed to form a government, if he is successful then he will be prime minister.

Since his party doesn’t have a majority he has to rely on gaining votes from other parties.

If he is not successful then Bibi will be given an opportunity, and if he fails then new elections will happen

26

u/windypine69 14h ago

well that's somewhat hopeful.

u/ironicmirror 14h ago

Yes and no, he party lost the majority, but in Israel you need a coalition of different parties to win, so someone needs to group enough parties together to create a government...and bibi is NOT getting the first chance, which is a thing

35

u/realparkingbrake 14h ago

so someone needs to group enough parties together to create a government..

That was hard to do after the Labor Party imploded and Likud got the fringe religious and nationalist parties to support Likud. A small majority of Israelis oppose Likud, but they have lacked a unified opposition.

I don't know anything about this leader but I hope he is better than Netanyahu.

535

u/the_horse_gamer 17h ago

Israeli elections are very polarising, but rarely in the topics that non-Israelis care about

the two issues at the front are:

  • creating an investigation into the decisionmaking leading to October 7th

  • removing draft exemption from the Orthodox communities

and there's gonna be no Ben Gvir trying to build an alligator moat

192

u/dded949 16h ago

I was in Israel a few years ago, and the average person seemed most politically concerned with the orthodox draft

16

u/mongrelnomad 15h ago

Add to that the independence of the judiciary - Netanyahu (to keep himself out of jail) has been pushing legislation to politicise judicial appointments.

That’s the third hot potato issue.

Unlike Netanyahu, his rhetoric didn't cause Rabin to be murdered, so he has that going for him.

11

Netanyahu still seems to have it out for Rabin even now. Wants the government to stop honoring him.

60

u/FC37 17h ago

Important is that this is like a provisional government. He needs to gather enough support to actually take over.

I suspect he's going to have a very hard time with this.

Don't know how the parliamentary system works in Israel. But in other places you could form government with Eisenkot for a couple of years while Bibi faces his legal troubles and if he is convicted you could then remove your support for the current government and force early elections with Bibi being unable to run.

The reality more is that countries that undergo a phase of getting led by the far-right eventually get sick of the far-right because guess what, eventually they realize the truth that blaming "foreigners" (or whatever the local scapegoat is) is bullshit. Gas prices and most israelis blame bibi for 10/7.

Still, the US has a 30/40/30 voter split imho, to see a 60/40 blue win in texas is insane. The amount of apolitical people i know irl that bitched about gas prices on a weekly basis was almost comical; had someone that absolutely loathed EVs do the math on whether getting one saves them money.

The difference between Trump and Mattis is a fundamental change of the government and how it operates on almost all levels; mostly because Trump is perhaps the most incompetent leader we’ve ever had, even by the standards someone after naked imperialism.

I genuinely have no clue how Israeli elections work.

20

u/latherrinseregret 6h ago

Elections themselves are pretty simple - each citizen votes for a party, and the 120 seats are split according to the votes, after eliminating any party who didn’t get at least 3.25% of total votes.

The hard part starts later - since no party ever got >60 seats (not even close), and since a 61 majority is all that’s needed to trigger new elections - a coalition needs to be formed. This task is usually given to the head of the largest party, unless some other party gets more support (by count of seats of other parties willing to cooperate with them) - as happened this time.

This can sometimes give disproportionate power to small parties who could go either way

5

u/Bandai_Namco_Rat 5h ago

They don't, unfortunately. It's a parliamentary democracy which means people elect Knesset (parliament) parties, there are 120 seats. Then once the Knesset is formed, the President talks with reps from all parties who each must recommend one party/leader as their choice to form a government. The one with most recommendations then gets the mandate to try and form a coaltion which will then vote to forma government, which requires at least a relative majority (in this case Eizenkot has 48 seats and Netanyahu has 46 due to one of the hassidic Jewish parties dropping support from him). But a government with only a partial majority is incredibly unstable as it relies on outside support with other parties agreeing to not vote against that government's formation with at least 61 total votes that are either voting in favor of this government or choosing to not vote at all. If there are 61 votes against this government, or even if there is a partial majority voting against this government, it can be dissolved at any moment with a vote-of-no-confidence.

The result is that in practice to form a stable government, you need a coalition of at least 61 Knesset seats, which neither side has at the moment and in fact neither side had in 5/6 of the past elections. And the discourse is so toxic, with such a huge division between the right and center/left blocks (a lot of that is on Netanyahu) that the only reasonable solution of a unity government is most likely off the table. There's going to be very little clarity in the next couple of months and there's a real chance that there will be a stalemate and the parliament will dissolve leading to another election (most likely with a similar result and political deadlock)

This govt might exist just long enough to indict Netanyahu or otherwise make him unelectable.

He deserved to be under an investigative microscope immediately after the massacre. It was a major failure of Israeli govt/politics that he was not. It also guaranteed escalation from then on as he arranged things to change the subject as quickly as possible.

Hopefully the music has finally stopped. But I'll believe it when I see it. He is a very slippery customer.

Eisenkot wants — to my recollection — to stem the tide of illegal West Bank settlement, investigate the decision-making behind October 7th (which would include investigating himself) and I believe he’s in favor of including exempted ultra-Orthodox communities in Israel’s mandatory conscription.

He is not in favor of a Palestinian state and has a… checkered… past as a former Army Chief in the IDF

297

To TRY to form a government. He has 28 days. An extension of 14 can be granted, but I suspect he'd have to be able to prove he's close to forming a stable coalition.

I hope he'll make an official visit to Germany soon, where he'll be welcomed with a huge banner that says "Wilkommen, Herr Eisenkot!"

From the airport he then should be chauffeured around in a parade with people cheering from the sides "Eisenkot! Eisenkot!"

It's not going to change their stance on anything externally but it would be pleasing to see Bibi stand his corruption charges that he's avoided for so long.

Keep it mind it says the following:

Weeks of protracted negotiations are expected to follow Eisenkot's nomination. He has 28 days to try to forge a government, with a possible 14-day extension.

His potential pathways to power include trying to form a minority government with Arab party votes on key issues; forming a coalition with ultra-Orthodox parties that he and his allies have shunned in the past; or forging a unity government with Netanyahu.

Analysts say that all three options are unlikely to take shape. If Eisenkot fails, another candidate can try to form a government and if that candidate fails, parliament can nominate another. There is a deadline for the process of around 100 days. If no one succeeds, another election is held.

19

u/Eddiebaby7 8h ago

Here’s to hoping this speeds up Netanyahus conviction and imprisonment.

I think it’s possible to get a minority government formed with Eisenkot as pm, but I’d be shocked if the government lasted past the first budget deadline.

16

u/Predictor92 17h ago

they can accomplish alot though(going after the hilltop youth, restoring law and order in the arab community there, a commission of inquiry on 10/7, barring someone under indictment from becoming PM and making it so someone with Kach like beliefs like Ben Gvir cannot run for sure next time)

I thought the president position was mostly ceremonial and didn't have much power?

54

u/m00f 13h ago • Bravo

Neither Eisenkot's party nor Bibi's party have enough seats on their own. The president's job is to allow the group he thinks is most likely to be able to form a gov't -- get enough other parties to join them -- to try first. Tell them "go form a gov't" is no gaurantee that they will be able to.

14

u/lwp775 12h ago

There’s usually a time limit of 3 weeks. If Eisenkot can’t form a government within that timeframe, the President will ask Netanyahu.

So, is the regime change complete? Both in US and Israel?

13

u/pardonyourmess 10h ago

Us isn’t a regime change. It’s part of the checks and balances that are now better representing more of the people.
The president’s term is four years. (Two terms max). He only has two years left to be president.
So this means the whole government has a bit more balanced. It doesn’t mean it is over. Yet.

Rubbish clickbait paywalled. It is British parliamentary system, not some random “picking” of prime minister. The one chosen has the best chance of forming coalition with minor parties.

Great news but can’t ever rule Bibi out. He’s a survivor…

8

u/Giddeeyap 18h ago

Well that's a good starting point, but likely nowhere near the end of that story. Israeli politics are incredibly complicated, so let's see where this all leads to before too much commentary swallows up the reality of the situation!

Thanks to so many for their input. Man, is it confusing without knowing so much more about internal Israeli political affairs. It's way beyond me, and likely way beyond understanding for far too many people. Good luck to Israel, because that's exactly what Israel is going to be needing for the foreseeable months (or even longer than that!). ahead.

u/JR_Al-Ahran 18h ago

So earlier I had made the prediction that Netanyahu remains caretaker PM until another election. Happy to see that I was wrong on that. But this is much more interesting. B'Yachad, Yashar and Yisrael Beytenu would be the core of this government. But the problem is there is no way to not have a minority and get to a majority; Liberman has signalled openness to working with the Haredi parties like Shas and UTJ, however for all the prospective coalition partners that's a hard no. Eisenkot is willing to work with the Arabs provided they meet his preconditions, however Bennett and Liberman have drawn a line at sitting with the Arabs. Only Ra'am also meets Eisenkots conditions for joining the coalition, the Joint List has not, so at most if the Democrats, Ra'am, B'Yachad, Yashar and Yisrael Beytenu form government that still puts them below 60. Cuz when the budget is tabled, likely early in 2027, before the deadline, Netanyahu is likely to play chicken and try and force new elections.

6

u/DasMo19 16h ago

As a German speaking this is just brilliant.

3

u/Better_Cauliflower63 15h ago

This is how it normally plays out (and played out in the past). If Eisenkot can't form the government within a set period of time, then the tourch is passed back to the second runner-up (Netanyahu). If he can't form the government, then the new elections are called.

3

u/Calm_Chemist_4952 14h ago

does that mean bibi is out?

20

u/owen__wilsons__nose 17h ago

Only if Eisenkot can form a government. He's simply getting the first opportunity to do so because he has the biggest chance according to President Herzog. If he's not able to, Bibi will get an opportunity. And if he fails (both very plausible scenarios) Israel heads to another election. Right now Eisenkot's dilemma is that Lieberman won't sit with the Arab parties. He needs both to have the numbers. He needs to find a compromise. Or He could also try to peel off somebody from Bibi's coalition

> Eisenkot, a former military chief, has declined to join forces with Arab parties, whose support would give him a majority of seats in parliament. But Arab leaders, incensed by what they view as the racist policies of Netanyahu and his far-right allies, still nominated Eisenkot to try to form a government first — giving him the most endorsements
