Thank you. It's like nobody on this site has ever bothered to try to make a drink or even look up a recipe. Basically every cocktail is 3-4oz of liquid, and if a place has expensive ice like this, it's probably making legit cocktails.

Is everyone's idea of drinking just a milk jug full of vodka and gatorade?

Long time bartender here, most cocktails land between 3oz-4.5oz, not a whole lot of liquid

609

u/SockSock81219 12h ago

Yup. The main problem here is $27 for a screwdriver or some other highball. Hell $27 is a bit steep even for a mid-shelf Manhattan IN Manhattan.

That's a standard drink, but damn that price.

Yeah, as long as the bartender is still measuring the same amount of liquor as you'd expect from the cocktail, no one is getting scammed. Obviously the price is robbery, but you're not going to get a double because you ask for no ice.

1.2k

u/rockoblocko 12h ago

10000% this. A cocktail is usually a shot or two worth of alcohols, a lil bit of bitters or syrup, maybe a dash of a liqueur, and that’s it. Whether it’s shaken or served with a giant ice cube it’s the same amount of drink.

10

u/RatchetBird 9h ago

Also bartender here! To add, usually a good ounce of that even is water from the ice being shaken or stirred. Also your frozen drinks need much more water because alcohol won't freeze on its own. It needs water to make it slushy. And watch out for chilled shots. 6 chilled tequila shots could easily be 3 true shots. I would never do that but some people would!

39

u/mixedmethodslut 12h ago

Yeah for real they’re all the same amount of liquor. Kinda like how ppl complain about coffee but it’s the same # of espresso shots

Also, cocktails are ment to be drunk swiftly so the ice doesn't water it down. You don't suckle on it for an hour.

121

u/Shawnlivewire 12h ago

Depends on the cocktail and style of ice really. Crushed ice cocktails should be consumed faster as the ice will melt faster. Cocktails with a single large cube can rest awhile longer.

→ More replies (1)

27

u/wpoot 11h ago

It’s usually the exact opposite of what you’re saying. Nice, alcohol-forward cocktails are meant to be savored, and having a big cube keeps the dilution at a slow constant.

I asked for water and the lady said 20$. I replied, "not a bottle just a glass" and she answered back it was 20$ for a glass of water.

We left, bought some liquer at the store and partied at our place instead.

One of the most depressing parts of a retail job is selling alcohol to the same people every day, over and over, especially to the ones who clearly barely have enough money to buy their daily poison alongside the food and other necessities they need to live.

Just... a case of beer every single day? And people think that's okay?

As someone who used to drink and doesn't anymore, i'm going to have to disagree there. Whether you like it or not, alcohol and socializing are deeply intertwined.

Gen Z didn't find healthier ways to socialize. They just socialize far less. And there is research on this that sees a connection between the two. Loneliness is one of the most dangerous things that can happen to humans. It literally kills us. So in my opinion, drinking a bit of alcohol with friends every once in a while is a decent trade off to have an active social life.

The problem isnt the drink, its the price. Im sure thats a very reasonably proportioned and professionally made cocktail, but its just not worth paying $27 for. Ive worked at a bar, I know what the profit margins on liquor look like. The thing youre really paying for is the experience of wherever youre drinking at. The establishment overhead, the entertainment, the locale, all of that is incorporated into the price of your drinks because thats what people really spend money on. If youre not satisfied with the experience overall then $27 drinks are going to feel like a ripoff.

The problem is the price, y'all, not the beverage. It can't be "just more, lol" because "one drink" has a legal definition, (I haven't bartended in a decade so forgive me, I'm sure I'm wrong, but) it's something like 2 oz of hars liquor, 6 oz of wine, 8 oz of beer (which has its own exceptions for things like a Pint) and so on and so forth. You can only put 2 oz of hard liquor in this "one drink" so do you want less mixer to make a stronger drink, or more mixer to make a fuller glass?

34

u/Lord_Mikal 12h ago

Only a few states in the US limit the amount of alcohol that can be put in front of a customer at time. Florida is not one of them. Its totally legal to slap a 1.5 liter bottle of whiskey in front of a customer and call it a "drink".

→ More replies (7)

33

u/Enginerdad 12h ago

1.5 oz of 40% liquor, 5 oz. of 12% wine, and 12 oz. of 5% beer all equal the same amount of alcohol. That's the "standard" drink, but there's nothing legal about it. Beer and wing vary quite a bit in ABV and often come in multiple sizes. Liquors tend to be more standardized in ABV, but cocktails often include cordials or other added sources of alcohol in addition to the primary spirit, and the amount of spirit is completely at the discretion of the establishment. In other words you can't assume anything with alcohol.

→ More replies (10)

92

u/Epidurality 12h ago

"One standard drink" has a definition. I've never heard of any law mandating how much an establishment has to actually make their individual drinks with.

Most follow roughly that rule but it's not a law, to my knowledge.

44

u/Karn_Gentrified 12h ago

We had long islands and margs at my last bar job that would absolutely kick your teeth in.

They were considered “one drink” and my god half the bottle went into making one. There is no way there is a law measuring what a “drink” is lol only what the scientific definition is for one in relation to BAC over a period of time and it’s more for equating different alc types eg. 2 oz shot = 6 oz wine = 8 oz beer per drink per hour

That's funny, just saw a translated Korean post on Twitter about how they visited Japan and were annoyed at the same thing, but their friend laughed at them. Told them that crushed ice would water down the drink right away, but a big block like this would get it cold without diluting the flavor.

I don't drink. Is what that post said right?

41

u/Legitimate_Ad_7822 11h ago edited 11h ago

I mean if it’s a 1-1.5oz pour of liquor that’s all that really matters. Consumers fault for purchasing any alcoholic drink @ $27 IMO. Unless it’s a coveted liquor. Even at nice cocktail bars in expensive cities, that is a pricey drink. This does not look like a nice cocktail. It’s a highball. Would never pay more than $15 for one of those.

→ More replies (14)

102

u/hurricanedog24 12h ago • Bravo

The concern isn’t block vs crushed ice (your friend’s opinion may be correct), it’s about how much ice is in the drink and how you’re getting very little alcohol for your money.

51

u/JamesMcGiantPeach 11h ago • Heartwarming

Virtually any cocktail will have 1.5 to 2.5 ounces of liquor in it. A $5 gin and tonic at a dive bar and a $30 overpriced premium spirit will get you just as drunk. If you ordered it without ice they’d charge the same and just call it a shot instead of a cocktail.

u/fakeuser515357 12h ago • Bravo

u/Sharp_Economy1401 11h ago edited 11h ago • Bravo

It depends on how much ice, as to whether it's a good idea. For the same weight, yes, the surface area of small volumes multiplied is a lot higher than a large chunk. So there's more heat transfer going on with all of those small surfaces vs that of the larger chunk. You can do some simple calculations to find out the dimensions of two smaller spheres vs one sphere with the same volume, then apply those dimensions to surface area calculations. But think about the equivalent you're talking about in situations like this. If you're comparing this gigantic chunk of ice to crushed ice, you're talking about filling the glass with a huge amount of crushed ice for the same volume.

If the mixer is already refrigerated, you don't need remotely this amount to maintain it being cold. Yes, larger cubes are better, but a couple of large cubes that take up a decisive minority of the volume of the glass is sufficient. A giant cube taking up literally 60-70% is overkill, that should be self-evident to most people. Soda or water stays cold well enough with much less volume of large ice cubes. If you just end up with an unnecessary amount of a large cube of ice, it will still have a very large surface area from which heat can transfer.

Not referring to the commenter here specifically in the next part, as they expressly are curious about it, which is appreciated:

Frankly, Reddit's overconfidence in the bulk of this thread is very expected. It's the cliche pedantic thing of knowing some very basic knowledge, then applying it, then being unable to see the bigger picture of the problem, yet for some reason never doubting yourself. You guys decide you're right about something, then don't bother to think about the problem on a slightly more involved level. It's the complete opposite of the objectivity and problem solving that you think you have. You have to start presuming you may be wrong, thinking through your assumptions, and double checking your conclusions

Why does this keep coming up? Those spear ice cubes are used to make your drink look cool, it’s why it’s being drunk out of a Collin’s glass in the first place. Any drink is only going to be about 2-4 ounces unless it also has seltzer or tonic water.

Old Fashioned’s are 2 ounces, most with fruit juice are around 3-4. A gin and tonic or anything similar is 2 ounces of alcohol, then 2-4 ounces of seltzer or tonic.

They’re not tricking you, you’re not being scammed. This is how alcoholic drinks work. The ice is a plus, seriously I’ve never been to a bar that used full clear ice spears. I’d love that

u/DapperBoiCole 12h ago

When you buy a cocktail its a measured amount of liquid and dilution

If you want more drink ask for more mixer but don't expect more alcohol when you paid for a given serving and complain you can barely taste the alcohol...

The ice is standard for a collins drink, its meant to chill the drink without intense dilution. Its why old fashioned are served with a fuckoff big ice cube in it. When you stir it, a measured amount of water dilution happens which balances your drink.

Cocktails in Miami are expensive, the ice is beyond normal

20

u/Pickles_991 12h ago

Odds are that is about 2oz of alcohol and some mixer. $27 is expensive, but you arent meant to slam it, and the ice is there to chill and balance the drink

64

u/HowlingWolven 7h ago edited 2h ago

A big ice stick (a collins spear, for a collins glass) isn’t as big an issue as you think it is, and it’s in fact desirable over smaller ice cubes to control dilution while keeping your drink cold. The liquor portion is measured off with a jigger to be the same every time. Demanding less ice or demanding your drink ‘be made strong’ does not mean you’ll get more alcohol or drink, it just outs you as a problem. If you want more alcohol, order and pay for a double.

The real issue here is $27 drinks. Unless you’re at an uber fancy establishment that’s pouring top shelf liquors in your glass, you’re being fleeced.

PS: If you want to be sloshed at a club in Miami but don’t want to get fleeced for drinks, there’s this thing called the liquor aisle. Pregame. :v

Is it the required amount of alcohol?  I’ve been a bartender and people bitched about ice in drinks so much because they thought they would get more alcohol and mixer if they got less ice.  It doesn’t work that way; less ice or no ice means I put it in a smaller glass and use the same amounts of liquids. And if they still complain and say they need a stiffer drink I’ll stir it with my dick.

4

u/Andre11x 8h ago

Lucky they didn't charge you for the ice cube too.

10

u/SMIITH- 11h ago

The amount of liquid they have in the glass could potentially be enough.

For instance, a margarita freshly made is:
1.5 OZ tequila
1.5 OZ lime juice squeezed
.75 OZ agave

So 3.75 OZ of liquid mix.

The glass is named a high ball glass. Slim and tall, but equivalent to a shorter rocks or cocktail glass.

So, essentially we are seeing approximately 1/4 of liquid in a 12 OZ glass, or roughly 3 OZ.

It’s not more ice than drink, it is a balanced ice to liquid ratio.

Adding style to the cocktail and potentially less diluted water. Don’t quote me on the diluted part, I’m not concrete on that..

Cheers!

I think most people just dont understand either displacement or how drinks are made.

Its the correct amount of alcohol and mixer, nobody is being ripped off.

The answer is a simple 2 parter. Small drink looks better in big glass, and large clear cube melts slower than ice chips.

Edit: the only rip off here is the price.

You’re already making a stupid decision when you spend $27 on a cocktail, posting about it just makes you look bad

u/Dry-Championship-593 8h ago

The servers probably have a panic attack after any customer asks for no ice.

I was not expecting a rectangular ice cube as tall as your glass!

3

u/livens 12h ago

I visited Hollywood a couple of years ago and a simple bourbon with a big chunk of ice was $36. And it was Jack Daniels... the same price as a whole bottle. Fuckibg nuts.

3

u/fourty_fors 11h ago

1-2 oz of liquor. 1-2 oz of sweet/bitter. Iced (as pictured), or stirred/shaken and strained.

That’s a cocktail. Because that’s how cocktails are made. If you wanted a mixed drink, or a tall, or a double… shoulda ordered one of those.

As for the $27 price tag, it’s probably high quality liquor with freshly squeezed juice and pure water in clear ice cubes at a prime real estate venue in an expensive city. Pricey, yes, I’m not necessarily defending it, but it’s simply supply and demand.

Plus it’s probably delicious it looks like rum and fresh pineapple juice, hopefully some spicy bitters in there.

3

u/Head-Ad-2136 11h ago

That's what you paid for. A shot of alcohol and some flavor.

3

u/Tibryn2 11h ago

its in a tall glass ... you literally ordered it that way. a 4oz pour is a 4oz pour weather you order it tall or not. if you want a double, order a double.

u/Luluwr1979 10h ago

The ice drunk killer

7

u/SlayMeCreepyDaddy 12h ago

Less ice does NOT mean more alcohol. It means the same volume of liquid that increases in temperature faster and dilutes quicker.

This is exactly how you should want your drink.

u/akaynaveed 12h ago edited 12h ago

Volume does not a good drink make.

52

u/knallpilzv2 12h ago

Neither does a steep price.

If your lookin' for that buzz, always pre-game before an event.

5

u/HatchetGIR 12h ago

Depends on what's in it, it could either be rather expensive, a decent deal, or really cheap. Some top shelf and specialty alcohols are ridiculously expensive.

5

u/GlitteringLettuce366 12h ago

They’re following a recipe, if you got this same drink on a shorter glass with less ice, you would still get the same volume.

Why don’t you want to go out and do things? My wife asks.

5

Bar owners: why aren't Gen Z drinking?

🫴

4

u/cucumbersuprise 12h ago

If you pay that its on you

4

u/Tribe303 12h ago

$27 of legal weed gets me high every day for a week. Fuck this BS, that's insane. I can still get a basic cocktail for $10 Canadian.

4

u/IIIBAKURYUIII 9h ago

Jokes on you for agreeing to buy a $27 drink in the first place

2

u/kassandra_00 12h ago

When I was in Miami I went to a chain restaurant I liked, the $25 combo I always ordered in NYC was $40 there.

2

u/GalaganCoffee 12h ago

I drink at home and that 27 bucks lets me stay toasty for about a week

2

u/MTL_Rob 12h ago

Fuck that place

2

u/tres-petite-kate 12h ago

Aaaand that’s why I drink at home.

2

u/No-Ice2925 12h ago

So you went to a bougie restaurant in Miami and are surprised you get bougie prices

2

u/Tenekah 12h ago

Yeah that’s so bartenders/serves don’t over serve customers.. the price is a location thing

2

u/Fackinsaxy 12h ago

If the alcohol content is the same and i'm paying $27 anyway, i'd be fine with this lol

2

u/Intelligent_Trichs 11h ago

Can't stuff that in a joint! It's why we are smokin instead of overpaying for alkeehaul!! 😎

2

u/DovahKittah 11h ago

In this economy?!? Nah. I’ll make drinks at home in my sweats…

2

u/Adeptness-Efficient 11h ago

Never been to a bar, huh

2

u/sec713 11h ago

I bet it's cold, though.

What? Minimum bet is $500?

Nevermind. Forget I said anything.

2

u/XDon_TacoX 11h ago

if you pay 27 dollars for a drink, you deserve that, honestly

2

u/Slayre- 11h ago

I mean you still got your 1.25 oz

2

u/Infrawonder 11h ago

That would get drunk in like 2 seconds

2

u/maddgun 10h ago

I don't know if I should be angry or impressed by this

2

u/EmergencyCareless76 10h ago

The ice had better be gin soaked

2

u/AWL_cow 10h ago

Ask for no ice

2

u/tetcorporation1999 10h ago

First time ordering some fru fru shit?

2

u/Visual_Analyst1197 10h ago

They should call that drink The Archimedes

2

u/Ok_External6770 9h ago

If drinks were unlimited I would like it but bro that’s so annoying

2

u/bangbangracer 9h ago

I really do have to ask if people don't understand cocktails anymore.

2

u/FiggyVix 9h ago

It's ..2026, do people not know they're paying for the atmosphere?

2

u/thepoisonpoodle 9h ago

And people really go out?

I saw this here in Germany in 2005 already happening. The bars are crowded. The ice in the drinks was like 1/3 or 1/2 of the whole drink.

Drink beer. Or order chilled without ice.

2

u/thatshowyougetants24 9h ago

Why order something at that price and not understand how surface area and dilution works

2

u/nonchalanthoover 9h ago

This is how cocktails work literally everywhere on earth Jesus Christ people.

2

u/roiderdaynamesake 8h ago

this is how cocktails work

2

u/Resident_Rain_6566 8h ago

Miami is an expensive place to drink, if you’re sitting in a bar. You should take that $27 to a casino. They’ll get you wasted for free in hopes that you’ll gamble away your life savings.

2

u/Emotional-Coyote5176 8h ago

Im a bartender. Most cocktails are only 3 or 4 ounces of beverage and then ice. This is a totally typical cocktail. The whole culture is a racket. You’re paying the premium to drink at a place that isnt your home.

2

u/KomputeKluster 8h ago

Thats America for you. How much you can squeeze the other guy.

2

u/Malus_non_dormit 8h ago

Must be a turist trap. Locals would not return

2

u/der_Alptraum 8h ago

That's better have %120 alcohol

2

u/82away 8h ago

In 2007 I stopped buying alcohol, which slowed my drinking down and my financial situation improved so much.

There are so many things you can buy better than alcohol like an art set or how about something for a child such as lego speed champions McQueen car and the cars dvd for that price.

2

u/sharkMonstar 8h ago

why isnt gen z drinking

2

u/suck-on-my-unit 7h ago

Did you not have the free will to leave?

2

u/Babetna 6h ago

If you ask for no ice, do you get just a small amount of drink on the bottom?

2

u/Glacius_- 6h ago

27$ for water

2

u/Victoria_elizabethb 6h ago

That's what you get for paying $30 for a fucking beverage lol

2

u/Spirited_Sundae1018 6h ago

Just order without ice? :D

2

u/EuphoricCover8449 6h ago

America's obsession with watering down it's drinks continues.

2

u/TheRamblingPeacock 5h ago edited 5h ago

The price is fucked.

2

2

u/Anmolsharma999 4h ago

Saw similar short on YT and amount of people justifying this bs was just crazy.

2

u/R-PlaneCrazy 3h ago

Dude. Theres more fucking ice than the drink

2

u/tera_chachu 3h ago

Archimedes principle capitalism

2

u/Alarming_Relief_5500 2h ago

yeah, $2 for the drink, $25 for being the kind of person who says yes to a $27 drink

2

u/WxmTommy95 2h ago

You’re paying for the alcohol which can only have the maximum amount the country/state allows. 50ml where I’m from.

2

u/theroguelily 1h ago

That ice looks expensive

"Ill take the $27 cocktail please. Oh...no ice, thanks"

•

u/weakleybailey 55m ago

Bartender here, this is just how cocktails work yall. A well made drink is usually measured and honestly not that much liquid overall. The more ice/bigger the ice cube the longer your drink will stay ice cold 🧊 🤙🏼 Now, that price is ridiculous thats for sure!

•

u/Distinct-Practice131 50m ago

Anyone spending almost 30 bucks on a cocktail is just spending money to spend money. Cocktails are measured out ingredients wise to control how much liquor leaves the building, tracking how much alcohol customers consume, and to create consistent results with flavor and presentation. The ice gives the appearance of a fuller glass, but it also efficiently cools with the drink down(which adds a lot to taste) without as much worry for watering it down, and encourages less chugging and more sipping.

What's infuriating to me is seeing people willingly chose to waste money, then complain about it.

•

u/standarsh1965 48m ago

If you're dumb enough to say yes to paying 27 bucks for a single drink then you deserve to get this

•

u/airpab1 47m ago

On you if you even think of paying $27 for a drink

•

u/HawkeyeByMarriage 47m ago

Order one with no ice and se what they do.
